Health Benefits of Eating Spicy Food

Health Benefits of Eating Spicy Food

Spicy Food is enjoyed all over the world because spices add an incredible amount of flavor to food. Cultures all over the world have dishes that excite and stimulate your palate with spices and add heat and flavor to everyday ingredients. But if you like spicy food like chilies, curry and hot sauces, there is so much more to look forward to.

Recent research shows that adding some spice to your meal can provide more health benefits than was ever thought. Yes! You heard it right; in addition to making your taste buds sizzle, spicy foods can also deliver many health benefits. These include:
  1. Helps in Losing Weight: Hot peppers contain Capsaicin which can speed up metabolism and help the body burn calories faster. This is because Capsaicin increases your body temperature and contributes to an increase in your heart rate. Furthermore, studies have shown that people who eat spicy foods eat smaller portions which can reduce their calories intake.
  2. Good for heart: Hot peppers may help to improve heart health by improving the body's ability to dissolve blood clots. Research has shown that low-density cholesterol (LDL or bad cholestrol) resisted oxidation for a longer period of time (which can clog your arteries) when chili was added to the diet, thus reducing the heart stroke risk. The capsaicin in peppers also fights inflammation, which has been identified as a risk factor for heart disease. Additionally statistics show that cultures that eat spicy foods frequently have a much lower rate of heart attack and stroke.
  3. Improved circulation: Spicy foods also promote good circulation, and they appear to lower blood pressure. When you eat spicy food, your body's temperature is raised; therefore, it increases your blood flow and gets your heart pumping. Peppers help strengthen the blood vessel walls as they are high in vitamin A and C.
  4. Anti cancer: Many studies have shown that regular consumption of chilies and curry decrease the risk of cancer. Capsaicin slows the growth of cancer cells and in some cases, even causes the cancer cells to die off without harming the surrounding cells. In countries where diets are traditionally high in capsaicin like India and Mexico, people tend to have lower rates of some cancers.
  5. Improved digestion: Spices also improve your digestion because they increase the hydrochloric secretion of your stomach. This in turn will increase blood flow to the stomach and even increase the mucous lining. Capsaicin also helps to kill bacteria like H. pylori and help to prevent or cure stomach ulcers. However, if you get heartburn from spicy foods, try taking an antacid relief tablet which will neutralize acids in the stomach.
  6. Arthritis: Turmeric (haldi) reduces joint inflammation and bone destruction in people. Circumin present in turmeric helps to alleviate the pain associated with arthritis.
  7. Cold and Flu: Capasicin promotes sweating and eases the discomfort of cold and flu symptoms. It also helps to open up the nasal passages. It may also reduce sinusitis, and other flu symptoms.
  8. Improved Sleep Pattern: Australian researchers have found that people who regularly consumed spicy meals fell asleep more easily. They also woke up easier and had more energy throughout the day.
  9. Mood lifter: Chili peppers boost the level of endorphins and serotonin that dulls pain and give us a feeling of well being. It can act as a depression fighter and powerful stress reliever.
  10. Improves breathing: Hot peppers act as an expectorant, and can help people with asthma, chronic bronchitis, emphysema, sinusitis, and other respiratory conditions breathe easier. Hot peppers can help you to breathe better by opening up clogged nasal passages.
However, it is important to take spicy foods moderately especially if you have sensitive stomach or you simply have a low tolerance for them. Learn to have your food spicy and hot and enjoy the amazing heath benefits of spicy foods.

Health Benefits of Karela (Bitter Gourd)

Health Benefits of Karela (Bitter Gourd)

Bitter melon (Karela) is a valuable herb gifted to us by Mother Nature. It is one of the healthiest vegetables known to man. Apart from being eaten mainly as vegetable, it is particularly reputed as a folk medicine due to its therapeutic properties. Although the bitter taste can turn you away, but it can really improve your health.

Bitter gourd looks like a hideous, light green cucumber and it tastes very bitter. There are two varieties of this vegetable. It is mostly found in tropical parts of the world, including Africa, Asia and South America.

It has numerous vital vitamins and minerals including vitamin A, Vitamin B1, Vitamin B2, Vitamin C, Iron, Calcium, Phosphorous, Copper and Potassium. There are many health reasons why you should take this bitter vegetable seriously. Here are a few:
  • Diabetes: The bitter gourd is particularly used as a remedy for diabetes because of its hypoglycemic action. It contains insulin-like peptides, alkaloids and charantin, all of which act together to lower blood and urine sugar levels without increasing blood insulin levels. These compounds activate a protein called AMPK, which is well known for regulating fuel metabolism and enabling glucose uptake, processes which are impaired in diabetics. You can take the juice of 4-5 bitter gourds every morning on an empty stomach, add seeds in powdered form to food or prepare a decoction by boiling the pieces of this fruit in water. If you are taking  medications to lower your blood sugar, adding bitter gourd might make your blood sugar drop too low. Monitor your blood sugar carefully.
  • Blood Purification: It has blood-purifying properties. As a result, the juice is used in the treatment of blood disorders like blood boils and itching due to blood poisoning. Have it little by little on an empty stomach daily, in 4-6 months you will see enhancement in your state.
  • Piles: Fresh juice of bitter gourd is good for patients suffering from piles. Take a mixture of bitter melon juice and buttermilk every morning for about a month and you will see an improvement. A paste of the roots of bitter gourd plant can also be applied over piles to get a favorable result.
  • Good for stomach: It contains cellulose which is a very good source of fiber thus preventing constipation. It also good digestive agent and helps in stimulating the secretion of gastric juices. This can be very helpful for people with dyspepsia. However, sometimes it may worsen heartburn and ulcers.
  • Aids weight loss: It stimulates liver for secretion of bile juices that are very essential for metabolism of fats. Thus, if you want to have a perfect, slim figure, then bitter gourd can help you.
  • Eye care: It has high amount of beta-carotene that helps alleviate eye problems and improving eyesight.
  • Alcoholism: It is an antidote for alcohol intoxication, and helps purify, restore and nourish liver. Its juice is also beneficial in the treatment of a bad hangover.
  • Cholera: Fresh juice of leaves of bitter gourd is also a useful medication in early stages of cholera.
  • Immune booster: A glass of bitter gourd juice in the morning can help to strengthen your immune system and increase your body's fighting power against infection. Researchers hypothesize that bitter melon is as an immunomodulator. One clinical trial found limited evidence that bitter melon might improve immune cell function in people with cancer.
  • Skin care: Bitter gourd is also effective in treating skin diseases or skin infections, eczema and psoriasis. It also helps in keeping the skin free from blemishes and keeps the skin glowing. The blood purifying properties make sure that you don't get acne.
  • HIV: Laboratory tests suggest that compounds in bitter melon might be effective for treating HIV infection. In one preliminary clinical trial, an enema form of a bitter melon extract showed some benefits in people infected with HIV. However, more research is necessary before this could be recommended.
In fact, its extracts are already sold as pills as well and it is being marketed as a blood sugar level reducing medicine. But rather than going for an indirect method of intake why not try to eat some amount of Karela in the form of vegetable/soup/curry in your diets, to get all the benefits.

Although there are several health benefits of including bitter gourd in your diet, it is not recommended to take it in excess amounts as it can lead to abdominal pain and diarrhea. Also, pregnant women are also advised against having bitter gourd.

New Update: 48% Children are Malnourished in India

48% Children are Malnourished in India

Child malnutrition is a biggest challenge our country is facing today even when the economy is said to surging ahead.

The politicians and media were talking about the sparkling new economic growth and development figures. There was no such attention given to the “other” growth and development figures — those related to child nutrition. These figures are less than sparkling. If current rates of progress in reducing undernutrition are not improved upon, India will reach the U.N. Millennium Development Goal of halving undernutrition by 2043. The target date is 2015. China has already exceeded the target.

a) Every second child under three in India is malnourished.

b) The number for under five children is 55 million which is two and half times the population of Australia.

c) 35% of the world’s malnourished children live in India.

d) Half the number of child deaths takes place due to malnutrition

e) In the world 40% of the low weight babies (below 2.5kg) are from India
One of the major causes of low birth weight babies in India is the high incidences of anaemia among women(56 per cent of women in India suffer from some form of anaemia).

f) almost one out of every two children in this country goes to bed on an empty stomach

Recent studies have shown that the damage is done by the time a child reaches the age of two. The critical age-group is 0-2 and it is this group that needs the maximum attention. The governments focus needs to shift to address the nutritional and survival issues related to this group

The issue of child malnutrition needs attention from all levels. To be fair to the Government of India, it needs help to combat undernutrition. It is such a huge burden (43 per cent of children are malnourished) that the government cannot do it alone. Civil society, business, and the academic community have to help. International donors have an important catalytic role to play. But nutrition is a public good. Leadership has to come from the government. We still do not see it.

What a Healthy breakfast ?

What a Healthy breakfast ??

For some, having a healthy breakfast in the morning is a daunting task. A lot of us are time constrained most of the time, so the ideal thing (we think) is to skip a meal and go straight to the lunch. Obviously, this does save some time but has damaging effects on your health in the long run.
For such people the ideal breakfast is Muesli and NO, it is not just another type of cornflakes. It is so much more!

What is Muesli?

Muesli is a breakfast cereal made from raw or toasted oats, dried fruit, nuts, and seeds. It was made in the 1900’s by Swiss physician Maximilian Bircher-Benner for patients in his hospital. There are two main types of Muesli: Dry Muesli and Fresh Muesli.
  • Dry Muesli: This is the most popular version of muesli and can be bought pre-packaged at almost all supermarkets. It is usually a loose mixture of mainly rolled oats and often also wheat flakes, together with various pieces of dried fruit, nuts, and seeds. Although it contains little fat and a significant amount of fiber, many of the pre-packaged varieties contain high levels of sugars and added ingredients such as chocolate or marshmallows which make it a non-healthy choice. You can look for a low sugar version or make your own fresh muesli to make sure that you are eating healthy.
  • Fresh Muesli: Fresh Muesli is a freshly prepared mixture that includes dry rolled oats or whole grain oats that have been soaked in water or fruit juice, as well as finely grated or blended fresh fruit (such as apples, grapes, berries, bananas and mango), lemon juice, ground nuts, seeds, milk products (such as yogurt, condensed milk or cream), and honey. This is certainly not your cup of tea if you live life in the fast lane. But if you could find some time out of your daily schedule, this can be the best breakfast food ever!

Why is it a good breakfast food?

The main reason why it is good for you is because of the numerous health benefits that it offers. Here are a few:
  1. Gives overall nutrition: People who don't eat breakfast usually don't get adequate nutrition during the day and are therefore less likely to get all the vitamins and minerals they need. Muesli, being a summation of whole oats, nuts, fruits, and wheat flakes, provides all round nutrition. Eating muesli at breakfast will enhance your energy, and also help you to maintain high concentration levels throughout the day.
  2. Fulfills the daily fiber requirement: In this age of processed food, very few people are able to achieve their daily fiber requirement through regular meals. Muesli being a very rich source of dietary fiber - both soluble and insoluble - helps in lowering the blood cholesterol level. The soluble fiber (beta-glucans) in muesli helps in avoiding dramatic changes in blood sugar level. It also relives constipation by improving the bowel moment in the intestinal tract.
  3. Aids weight loss: The high calorie intake during breakfast allows your body to function better and helps you become less hungry during the day. The reason lies in the fact that the fibers swell up by absorbing water, leaving lesser space for the intake of more food in the stomach. The B-complex vitamins in muesli also regenerate fat metabolism. The balanced breakfast in the morning also speeds up your metabolism which burns more calories. Adding to that, recent studies indicate that people who eat breakfast exercise more since they have adequate energy to do so.
  4. Reduce risk of cancer: Oats, nuts and seeds, when added to Muesli, contribute plenty of phytochemical agents called lignans and antioxidants which decreases the risk of problems like breast cancer, prostate and ovarian cancer.
  5. Prevents heart diseases: The presence of manganese in muesli along with low saturated fats keeps your heart safe. The nuts bring to the table the heart-healthy monounsaturated fats and essential omega-3 fatty acids.

What can U add to your Muesli?

Well the simple answer is – Just about anything healthy! Here is list to help you with your dilemma: oats, cornflakes, riceflakes, rye flakes, barley kernels, almonds, walnuts, hazelnuts, macadamias, pumpkin seeds, sesame seeds, apple, banana, papaya, pineapple, dates, prunes, and raisins.
If you are using a pre-packaged muesli, you can serve it quickly after mixing it with milk, yogurt, fruit juice, or even just plain water. If desired, pieces of fresh fruit may be added. Alternatively, the mix may be soaked overnight in milk and then served with fresh fruit.

Eating a healthy breakfast is very important to give you the best possible start into a busy day. Muesli in general is a very good start to the day.

Always remember a sound breakfast wins the day!

Why a Healthy Breakfast?

Why a Healthy Breakfast?

You know how mom used to always say that breakfast is the most important meal of the day? Well, guess what? She was right! Mom knows best when it comes to realizing that breakfast is the fuel that keeps us running throughout the day.
Many people make the mistake of skipping breakfast in their daily diet. This may be due to any number of reasons: rushing off to work, jumping into household chores, getting caught up with child care or just plain poor eating habits. Breakfast is an important element in one's daily diet, whatever type of diet you may prefer. Starting your day with a good breakfast boosts your energy, increases your attention span, and heightens your sense of well-being. You'll be in better control of your emotions. A good breakfast is one that provides at least one third of the day's calories. Eating breakfast also aids in weight management.

Does skipping breakfast affect Me?

A skipped breakfast actually ruins our entire appetite and metabolic cycle resulting in obesity. In order to understand how, let us take a look at our meals times:
Mostly, we wake up in the morning a little groggy, dying to catch perhaps 10 more minutes of sleep. Then we take a shower, change and rush of to work. At the workplace, we begin by the coffee or tea. This is followed by endless cups of tea along with biscuits and in many cases, a samosa at 12 noon. By lunchtime, our stomachs are filled with tea/coffee as a result we skip our lunch. Instead, we have sweet drinks like colas and some sandwich or more biscuits. Finally at 6 pm, we are   starving and ready to eat an elephant. As soon as we reach home, the little namkeen packets come out of the kitchen cupboard and we binge till we feel satisfied. Immediately after 2 hours, we dutifully also eat the dinner consisting of dal (pulses), curd, chicken, roti and rice.
Now, let's take a peek into the metabolic cycle:
At night, while we are asleep, the food is churned and digested in the stomach. Some of the undigested food (especially if you have eaten too much) stays in the stomach, while the remaining is sent to the liver as sugar where it is stored and converted to fat. In the morning, as we wake up, the heavy undigested food is still in the stomach which makes us groggy and tired. As we try to drink tea to stimulate ourselves, our appetite actually slows down and we do not feel hungry for lunch.  Plus, the hectic work pace also assists in avoiding food. This is the biggest mistake that we do because by this time the body is at the peak of its burning capacity and we are working on an empty stomach. In the evening when we finally reach home, we are tired and mentally stressed out and search for comfort foods. This is the second biggest mistake that we do because by this time our burning capacity has dropped down! All of this eventually results in weight gain and obesity.

What is the ideal breakfast for me?

Breakfast need varies in different constitution like:
  • Vata Constitution: Your breakfast needs to be filling. You not only need a breakfast of poha/idli/bread but also a mid morning snack of whole wheat biscuit/oat biscuit/murmura. Sometimes, you can also have some hot oat porridge with some nuts and raisins or honey.
  • Pitta Constitution: You need a filling breakfast of stuffed chapati OR besan (gram flour)/moong dal chila OR brown bread toasts with tea.
  • Kapha Constitution: You need a light breakfast of fruits along with a light herbal tea.

Common excuses for not eating breakfast

  • "No time?"How much time does it take to eat a bowl of cereal? Make toast and eat it on your way to work. Make your breakfast the night before. Making time for breakfast is making time to be healthy.
  • "Not hungry?"To get started, don't eat anything after an early supper. Finish supper by 7:30 p.m.
  • "Might gain weight?"Eating breakfast will actually help you reach and maintain your healthy weight. Your appetite will be satisfied longer. You'll be eating food when you can best burn the calories. You'll feel great. Eat breakfast.
  • You "don't like eating breakfast?"It is in your best interest to eat breakfast. Take the step. Do the right thing. Eat breakfast.

Starting your day with breakfast sets you on the path to success that day. Breakfast helps avoid distraction, helps you avoid overeating, and enhances your attentiveness and performance. Most people can sustain themselves for a few hours on a breakfast of 250-350 calories. But skipping that small amount entirely could be the biggest mistake of your day!
Whatever your choice, eat something.
